David Ferrer took the Golden Bagel Award™ this year barely edging out Roger Federer by 4 fries. Ferrer and Federer both handed out 7 bagels (6-0 sets) to their opponents throughout the year. “We had to count fries (6-1 sets) to determine the winner this year”, said award sponsor Tom Suhler. Ferrer administered 18 fries compared to Federer’s 14. This year caps a great year for David Ferrer including his move from No. 20 in the world during June of 2006 to his current career high of No. 6.

“This year has been the most closely contested race since the awards inception,” Suhler continued. “Novak Djokovic and Richard Gasquet both gave out 6 bagels while Rafael Nadal and Nikolay Davydenko each delivered 5.”

The complete rundown of the bagel count can be tracked throughout the year at www.goldenbagelaward.com. The site now includes historical statistics on some former tennis greats including Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, and Mats Wilander. And who leads that group as the all-time bagelmister? Jimmy Connors with 180 career bagels and 402 fries.

SideSpin recently released Sharing a Laugh with Marat Safin on DVD. “The Golden Bagel Award Story” was included on the DVD as a bonus track. The story covers the creation of the award and features video of the inaugural award presentation to Roger Federer.
